Eyin temi, This is one of the times where I feel uncomfortable with my hair. Dry and itchy scalp, patting my hair several times to find relief from the itch even though what I really want to do is turn my fingernails into Wolverine’s metal claws and scratch that itch until I feel better, sweating and general discomfort. And I know I’m not the only lady who experiences moments of discomfort with our hair because the weather is so hot. So I am here to help and offer you advice on how you can care for your hair in hot weather.

This is the time to wash your hair regularly. You can wash your hair once or twice a week. I wash my hair with a cowash mid-week and a shampoo and conditioner weekend. Washing your hair gives you relief from the heat, cleans your scalp from dirt, dust and build up while ensuring that your pores are not clogged and your scalp is clean enough to encourage growth.

The weather is hot and dry. Deep conditioning your hair will infuse it with moisture that is needed for hair growth, beautiful bouncy curls maintaining the overall health of your hair. You can use a store bought product like the Shea Moisture Yucca and Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Masque or use natural ingredients like honey, avocado and eggs etc. to mix your homemade deep conditioner. I deep condition my hair once a week or once in two weeks depending on how my hair feels and the protective style I have on.

I advise you to protect your hair strands this hot and dry season to avoid breakage. You can do low manipulation styles like twists, cornrows, high buns, roll and tuck, etc or you can braid your hair. I’ll also advise that whatever style you chose, ensure it is one that will give you easy access to cleanse your scalp and oil it regularly. In January, I did crotchet braids and I was able to wash my hair and oil it as much as I wanted to. So when my scalp felt hot and uncomfortable, I quickly washed my hair and gained instant relief.
Hair gets thirsty too especially in this very hot and uncomfortable weather. You can use a good leave in conditioner like the Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream or KUI Tea Tree and Cinnamon Leave-in Conditioning Mist to moisturize your hair. If you’re on a budget or prefer to use homemade products, you can add water and a few drops of oil (I use coconut oil) into a spray bottle to spritz your hair. Remember, your hair needs moisture to grow and thrive.

Bonus tip: If your scalp is itchy or you have dandruff, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil to your shampoo to wash your hair. You can also add a few drops of it to a carrier oil like coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, etc. to massage your scalp. Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties that help fight/prevent itchy scalp and dandruff.

When my scalp was super itchy, I added a few drops of tea tree oil to my DIY Liquid Black Soap shampoo and use it to wash my hair. I felt good afterwards and was so happy. I learnt this from Kenny Olapade’s blog post. You can check out the post too, click here. So that’s it guys. I hope you find these tips helpful.
